What is CIF Funding?
The Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) is an annual funding scheme provided by the Department for Education (DfE) to support essential maintenance, improvement and expansion projects in schools and academies across the UK.
CIF funding aims to address significant building condition needs, providing a vital opportunity for schools and academies to improve their facilities and create an enhanced learning environment for students.
At BTG Eddisons, we understand the significance of CIF funding for schools, and our team of experts can guide you through the application process and manage the project to ensure the successful realisation of your improvement plans. Call 0808 253 7223 or claim your free consultation to learn more.
What Can CIF Be Used For?
The Condition Improvement Fund is important because it ensures that school buildings are kept in a safe and working condition. This includes keeping them warm (heating, windows, roofing), dry (roofing, windows) and safe (fire safety, asbestos removal, safeguarding the perimeter, M&E).
“The Condition Improvement Fund ensures schools can swiftly address essential repairs, safeguarding learning environments and allowing students to thrive without disruption.”
Ian Harrington, Regional Managing Partner (North)
Who Is Eligible for CIF Funding?
The funding is designed for maintained schools, academies and sixth-form colleges. To meet the CIF funding eligibility criteria, your educational institution must be:
- A stand-alone academy
- A school in a multi-academy trust (MAT) with fewer than five schools or less than 3,000 pupils
- A Voluntary Aided (VA) school in a VA body or group with less than five schools or fewer than 3,000 students
- A sixth-form college
- A school with a signed academy order that the department expects will convert to a CIF-eligible responsible body
How Do I Apply for CIF Funding?
While the application process may change annually, you can typically expect it to look something like this:
- Register on the CIF portal
- Prepare your application by gathering photographic evidence, arranging condition surveys and receiving cost estimates
- Draft your statement of need
- Submit your application and wait to find out if you are successful
We will be happy to support you through these stages if you want to improve your chances of success. Not only can we prepare and write your application; our building consultancy team can conduct the condition surveys and cost estimate assessments.
