“The Post-16 Capacity Fund is a crucial opportunity for schools and colleges to expand facilities, meet growing student demand and enhance learning environments. Investing in modern infrastructure ensures young people receive high-quality education and training for future careers.”

Ian Harrington, Regional Managing Partner (North)

What Has Changed with the New 2026 Post-16 Capacity Funding?

Some changes have been made to the way education providers in certain areas apply, and this depends on whether you fall under a devolved or non-devolved authority:

  • Non-devolved authorities will see little to no changes to the application process from the last time this funding was available, and can apply via the Department for Education (DfE)
  • Devolved authorities, on the other hand, will have to go through local government, where the criteria may have changed

In terms of funding, successful applicants can receive grants starting from £250,000 up to £4 million. The capital can be used to create new teaching and training spaces, build new facilities, upgrade existing estates, or lease temporary accommodation.

Who Funds the Post-16 Capacity Fund?

The Department for Education (DfE) is responsible for the Post-16 Capacity Fund. It will handle applications and decide which schools should be awarded the funding.
