Armthorpe Academy Dilapidated Modular Classroom Replacement
Challenge
Eddisons were instructed by the Academy to apply for Condition Improvement Funding (CIF) to replace the dilapidated modular classroom.
We identified that the building had come to the end of its useful life. Rotten timber cladding, thermally inefficient single glazed windows and failed roof covering had resulted in water ingress into internal electrics. This made the building a health and safety concern for students and staff.
We also found that the accessibility of the unit was non-compliant with the Equality Act 2010, as it did not provide sufficient access for non-ambulant people.
In addition, the fire alarm provision was not suitable for the application, and its poor thermally efficiency meant large annual heating costs.
Solution
Eddisons delivered the project on a budget. The new modular unit has allowed the school to provide a safe and warm teaching environment for pupils over the next 30 years.
Results
Despite the requirement for a planning application due to a material change, the scope of works were delivered within the specified programme dates and practical completion was achieved within the first week of the new term.
As a result of inventive design work and advice sought from the local planning department, Eddisons produced and delivered a practical design which utilised modern solutions whilst remaining sensitive to the surrounding area and providing a high-grade appearance.
