A school in Reading, where we provide ongoing building management support, required assistance to reduce its carbon footprint and move towards net zero. The site had previously been fitted with a ground source heat pump that never functioned correctly and was subsequently removed and replaced with traditional boilers. Our sustainability team identified an opportunity to review the building’s energy performance and explore decarbonisation options that would deliver long-term environmental and financial benefits.

Approach

Our sustainability experts conducted a comprehensive review of the school’s carbon footprint and prepared a Heat Decarbonisation Plan. This assessment revealed that the site was an ideal candidate for air source heat pump technology and additional energy-saving measures.

We secured Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) funding through Salix Finance on your behalf, ensuring the project could proceed without placing additional financial pressure on a limited budget. Our team then managed the entire delivery process, from procurement through to installation and commissioning of new air source heat pumps alongside a range of complementary energy efficiency improvements.

Following installation, we worked closely with contractors, equipment suppliers, and the building management system (BMS) controls team to complete seasonal commissioning and system optimisation. We also provided comprehensive training and system familiarisation sessions for your staff to ensure they had the confidence and knowledge to operate the new equipment effectively.

Results

The school now benefits from a fully operational, energy-efficient heating system that significantly reduces carbon emissions and running costs. The air source heat pumps are performing as expected, and the facilities team are equipped with the skills needed to maintain optimal performance.
