Great British Energy’s £80 Million Solar Panel Scheme

Sustainability is an important topic in the UK, as the government continues their ambitious 2050 Net Zero targets. Research has discovered that schools and universities represent over 35% of public sector building emissions (as of July 2018), making the education sector a key area of concern.

New schemes are now being introduced to make school buildings more environmentally friendly, and the latest comes from Great British Energy (GBE). It is expected to not only improve the greenness of these properties but also reduce energy bills, which are currently on the rise.

Our guide will help you understand how this initiative works and the benefits it will bring. Continue reading to learn more.

What is the new Great British Energy scheme?

Great British Energy’s first project will provide funding to install solar panels on around 200 schools. It was announced in March 2025, with £80 million available to pay for the scheme. GBE will begin working with educational institutions immediately so they can begin reaping the rewards of switching to solar power.

“This bold investment in rooftop solar and renewable energy schemes is exactly the kind of leadership we need to accelerate the UK’s transition to a low-carbon future. By empowering schools to generate their own clean power, the government is helping to reduce emissions and deliver real, long-term savings on energy bills. It is a win-win for public services and the planet.”

Nazar Soofi, Head of Sustainability and Decarbonisation

What are the advantages of the GBE funding?

· Schools could save up to £25,000 on energy bills

· Around 100,000 pupils will be positively impacted by it

· Training with local further education colleges will be created

· Green skills can be built for the future

· Carbon emissions can be reduced, helping the UK meet its sustainability goals

Who is eligible for the initiative?

The funding is available for state schools and the focus will be on those in the areas of greatest need.
