Wootton Upper School Reception Relocation
Challenge
The existing reception area posed safeguarding concerns, as visitors were required to walk through the site before signing in. To address this, a new main entrance and reception area was needed at the front of the building to improve security and access control.
Solution
Refurbishment and alterations were carried out, including the conversion of a classroom into a new reception area. The scheme incorporated a visitor waiting area, Equality Act-compliant WC, a bespoke reception desk, automatic doors, an accessible ramp and steps, CCTV installation, and a new entrance canopy.
Potential Obstacles
The project faced several challenges, including asbestos removal, structural alterations to accommodate wider entrance doors, budget constraints, adherence to Covid-19 construction guidance, planning approval for the entrance canopy, and the complexities of working in a live school environment — including managing noise and health and safety.
Results
The works were completed to a high standard, on time and within budget. The new entrance significantly improved pupil safeguarding and provided a larger, more functional workspace for reception staff.
All works were delivered in line with application costs.
